New UK Funeral Methods Under Review
Earlier this month, the Law Commission published a consultation seeking views on a legal framework to provide for regulation of new funerary methods beyond traditional burial and cremation — opening the door to more sustainable, innovative practices in the UK.
The Commission’s consultation paper highlights Alkaline Hydrolysis (also known as Resomation, water cremation) and natural organic reduction (commonly referred to as human composting) as two alternative methods already in use in other countries. These approaches are currently unregulated in the UK.
The Law Commission’s provisional proposals recommend the development of a dedicated legal framework that would enable the safe, transparent, and regulated use of such methods in future. At Resomation, we welcome this review and see it as a critical step toward offering greater choice to the public while supporting the transition to more sustainable end-of-life options.
The consultation will run until 4th September 2025, with a final report and draft Bill to follow.
As pioneers of Alkaline Hydrolysis, Resomation, represented in the UK by Kindly Earth, continues to work to support the introduction of this gentle, water-based alternative to flame cremation—offering a more environmentally responsible way to say goodbye.
